Fish!

Oh, the little pleasures in life. Had a very fruitful grocery shopping trip yesterday. For the first time ever, I saw celery (imported from America) in the supermarket. Happily bought 2 bunches (only 99-yen or S$1.40 per bunch!). Also bought a delicious-looking small fish that I intended to steam for dinner tonight. Was inspired by the steamed fish that my friend Ophelia cooked for lunch while I was back. It seemed quite easy to steam a fish. Afterall, I'm Teochew too, steaming fish should come naturally to me.

So, I came home looking forward to having delicious steamed fish for dinner. Opened the packet and when I tried to cut slits in the fish, I realised that the stupid fish still had scales!! Arghs!! Embarked on the very time-consuming, not to mention messy, task of de-scaling the fish. Recalling what I've seen on TV, I just ran the knife against the direction of the fish scales. This resulting in the scales popping out and landing EVERYWHERE! Sigh, that was a truly messy job (and I don't think I did a very thorough one). I certainly do not recommend de-scaling fish on your own.

Anyway, after lots of hard work, here's my first (and maybe last) very own steamed fish! YAY! (Was mildly shocked when I opened the pot cover. I only added a bit of soy sauce, all the water must have come from the fish or maybe the steam.)

Verdict? Tasted pretty good! Flesh was cooked and firm but still moist. Good fish! But I dunno what type of fish it is :)

Hehehe. You're so cool Cindy!!!! That fish looks DELICIOUS. I think I shall go make my maid steam me a fish tomorrow!

But why do the plums look like cherries? Are they cherries?!

Looks like a sea bream (ang kor li). Use a plastic bag, big enough for your hands, fish and knife to work in, the next time you want to de-scale a fish. It will trap the scales from shooting all over.

    ah yee

Not plums, not cherries...they're cherry tomatoes, Anne! I'm sure your maid can do a better job than me! :)
