This family has set up its koi-no-bori (carp streamers) early. Families with young boys will usually put up these koi-no-bori for こどもの日 kodomo-no-hi (Children's Day) on 5th May. These are displayed in the hope that the boys in the family will grow up healthy. Yes, it's not fair that Children's Day is only for boys, even though girls have their own Dolls Festival on 3rd Mar.
